Movies

I love great films (see our comparison post) about man or woman on the water dealing with nature and whatever elements are out there. Makes me want to take to the sea. These movies will do just that with beautiful sailing scenes. We use Netflix DVD for most of these films.

  1. The Boat (by Buster Keaton) (also try The Navigator, Love Nest) .
  2. Captains Courageous (Spencer Tracy)
  3. Deep Water (Documentary about the tragedy of Donald Crowhurst)
  4. White Squall (Jeff Bridges)(first real sailing movie that I watched back in '96, know your crew)
  5. Captain Ron (funny, Kurt Russell)
  6. Between Home, Odyssey of an Unusual Sea Bandit, documentary of a young solo sailor, Nick Jaffe
  7. All Is Lost (Robert Redford), sailors yelled at the movie- for poor decisions of main character
  8. Kon-Tiki movie (remake of the original Academy Award winning documentary, 1951)
  9. Maidentrip (Laura Dekker, sailor, unfortunately Laura does not endorse the movie, but I really enjoyed it, and wished that it would focus more on the places that she visited than her).  I just cannot imagine a camera on me the whole time if the trip is for me.
  10. Violets are Blue (Sissy Spacek)
  11. Dead Calm (Nicole Kidman, suspenseful drama)
  12. Masters and Commanders (Russell Crow)
  13. Wind (beautiful scenery and live action, but slow-boring love story in the beginning and middle)
  14. Pirates of the Caribbean (Johnny Depp filmed on the now sunkin' ship)
  15. The Riddle of the Sands (enjoyed it, real beautiful sailing, "two British yachtsmen stumble upon Kaiser German plot to invade the coast of England")
  16. Knife in the Water (Roman Polański's first feature film-foreign, beautiful b/w sailing scenes)
  17. Donovan's Reef (John Wayne, directed John Ford, used his sailboat ketch, USS Araner)
  18. Summer Rental (funny, sailboat near the end, John Candy)
  19. Amistad (Matthew McConaughey, Morgan Freeman)
  20. The Incredible Voyage of Bill Pinkney (told by Bill Cosby, first black man to solo circumnavigate)
  21. 1492 Conquest of Paradise (Gérard Depardieu)
  22. Overboard (TV movie drama 1978, filmed near Tahiti, about a wife knocked overboard)
  23. Message in a Bottle (Kevin Costner)
  24. The African Queen (Katharine Hepburn, first major film on location in Africa)
  25. The Old Man and the Sea (Spencer Tracy)
  26. Morning Light (documentary of 15 rookie sailors, sponsored by Disney)
  27. Hot Pursuit (stupid funny, beautiful tropical scenery, John Cusack)
  28. The Boat that Rocked (aka Pirate Radio) (funny, Bill Nighy)
  29. Weight of Water (Catherine McCormack)
  30. The Lady from Shanghai (directed by Orson Welles feature Errol Flynn's 118 foot schooner sailboat, Zaca)
  31. Wedding Crashers (funny, family was way into sailing, Schooner Woodwind II)
  32. 50 First Dates (last part of the movie, 51' Formosa)
  33. Rum Diaries (Johnny Depp, Puerto Rico)
  34. Charlie St. Cloud (a few great sailing scenes, strange, unique storyline)
  35. Longitude, about John Harrison, British inventor of marine chronometer
  36. Dove (true story of a 18 yr old boy, sailed around the world on his own, need to read the book)
  37. 180 South  (a documentary more mock to me, cool sailing scenes like when the mast broke and surfing, but is hypocritical about materialism while promoting expensive Patagonia products everywhere; pushing anti technology while helicopter videotaping them on a mountain)
  38. Side by Each, bizarre, funny movie about a dream of sailing away not fulfilled
  39. Life of Pi, beautiful scenes especially the island that feeds at night
  40. The Great Gatsby, original and recent film have beautiful sailing scenes
  41. Caddy Shack, 1980 comedy, parts films on a Key Biscayne near Miami, Florida
  42. Mud, drama with Matthew McConaughey and an island and boat

  1. Try "Overboard"...NOT the 80's movie with kurt Russle and Goldie Hawn, but a made for TV movie with Cliff Robertson and Angie Dickenson. I used to see it on TV every once in a while, but not for many years now. Beautiful sailboat filmed on location in the South Pacific....I have it recorded on a DVD somewhere!
