Boatmade

Made on the boat, for the Crew, by the Crew:
  • Liqueurs
  • Signal Flags (6 colors of nylon fabric from fabric.com ($8 per yard) and white trim, 1 inch per foot LOA of boat)
  • Using cork (Quercus suber-harvesting the bark every 9 years, trees live for over 250 years)
  • Shampoo (baking soda and water mixes with the oil in your hair to form a soap)/ Conditioner (vinegar, water & panthenol (brewers yeast)) the acid makes the scales lie against the hair)
  • Soap (sodium stearate) mix fat and an alkali (base-lye (sodium hydroxide), add heat to make a soap
  • Toothpaste (baking soda, salt, water, peppermint and parsley), rinse with hydrogen peroxide and water to kill germs and whiten teeth
  • All Purpose Cleaners (vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, or lemons)
  • Sun Dried Fruits
  • Cheeses (boil milk and buttermilk together, strain in a cheesecloth and sweeze out the water), need local fresh milk (timeshare a cow?)
    • Mozzarella Cheese: milk, citric acid, rennet (enzyme (avail. vegetarian)): heat milk and citric acid to 90 degrees F, add rennet, let sit for 5 minutes, reheat to 105F, stir, gather, and remove curd, add a little salt, knead and stretch curd.  Place the cheese in cold water to cool
  • Butter (churned heavy whipping cream, Pour cream into blender. Process for 10 minutes, or until the butter separates. Strain off the liquid. Press butter into a small bowl with the back of a spoon to further remove liquid.)
  • Sour Dough Bread Starter: organic aged grapes and flour (presses and stored in a container for a week, strain the juice, and discard the pulp)
  • Sour Cream (1 cup milk, 2 Tablespoon lemon juice) cover for 8-12 hours, keep in fridge for 2+ weeks
  • Yogurt
  • Breads (flour, yeast, water (or milk), salt) video by Joanne Chang of Flour Bakery
  • Crackers (water crackers, tried wheat thins (add sugar, baking powder)): flour, water, oil (or butter), and bake (why didn't my grandmother teach me that).
  • Sugar: use food processer to make superfine sugar, add molasses to make brown sugar, or use honey-agave syrup instead of sugar (less worries about bugs)
