Somethin' 'bout My Dog

Jimmy Buffett sings it well in 'Somethin about a Boat'...

"Just a-waggin' that tail
Grinnin' that grin
Somethin' 'bout my dog
Makes her my best friend...
That gives a man Hope"

Thanks for a trip to the Beach on Bolivar Peninsula.
Still has hope and energy to live.  In Bud's life there were rarely a dull moment.  Now he can sit back on all that he has done in his life and remember the trips, the food, the beaches, the friends, and the fun along the way.  When some are counting him down, he is waking back up, walking, eating, living, and smiling.  Many dogs never leave their back yard  If he could still talk well again, then he would tell you some true tales where his tail has been.

Most recently when we had the flood on Memorial Day, Bud rose to a hero status.  The rains were falling, and his little family of four were fast asleep.  Bud woke up at 10:30 pm, stood up, and walked around the bed to me while whimpering.  I told Bud that it is okay and go back to sleep.  Well he heard nothing of it.

He walked to JT's side of the bed and whimpering even more.  JT frustrated with being awoken, told him to lie down and that all is okay.  Bud again refused and came back to my side crying even louder.

Now he had already been out to potty before the rain so I know that was not the problem.  So reluctantly I got up and pointed Bud to the water bowl.  He walked to the patio door with the closed blinds.  I peeked through and what did I see.  'JT get up', I proclaimed.  The water is nearly passed the huge drainage pipe across Bayou.  Water is shooting out of the drain like Niagara Falls and the water level is halfway up the pipe.

Bud lay down under the desk and went to sleep.  He alerted us to the flash flood and his job was done.  Whitley had slept along with us.  Bud was our hero.

We put on our clothes, and turned on the local news.  We discussed about moving to higher ground.  But where do you go in the Heights.  I jumped onto twitter and found numerous posts about flooding at Hubcap Grill down the street.  Neighbors parked their cars in the yard since some of the streets were flooded.  We discussed about going to a hotel but which close ones allow dogs and are the roads flooded.  The rains kept falling harder, and the bayou kept rising.

The officials on TV said to shelter in place.  JT got on reddit and found some great information about the flood waters on the Bayou.  I watched the water depth on harriscountyfws website for our location.  The weather men were predicting that more rain was coming.  We had a few more feet to go before it was out of its banks.  We placed all our electronics on the top shelf of the closet.  I put on warmer clothes to conserve my body heat.  We just waited, watched, and planned what if's.

Bud was still fast asleep.  I thought about his rocky couple of months, and people's inappropriate comments about euthanasia and him.  Well they were wrong!  Bud has protected his family once again.  Bud will not give up, and we will not give up on him.

As Bud enjoys the salmon tube with no grains from Vital Grain Free, he stares out the back window or sits on the patio by the bayou and smells the passersby.  He is still walking to go potty three times a day or more.  He even went sailing (sleeping down below) with us across Galveston Bay to watch the Friday night fireworks.  As the cancer grows and Bud grows weak, we are doing right for Bud and us because we are together.  That's all that really matters in the end is really being there for your love ones.

Enjoy the last Friday Summer nights of Fireworks at Kemah for 2015.  Live in the present.
